Is the Tea Party Fueling the Attacks on the California's Assembly?
It's becoming clearer who's behind some of the more recent criticism of the California Assembly. And though it hasn't been reported by the media, it should be no surprise to anyone that the right-wing machine is engineering many of the attacks. The other day, I pointed out http://www.camajorityreport.com/index.php?module=articles&func=display&aid=4706&ptid=9 that Dakin Sloss, who bills himself as a Stanford student, serves on the Board of Directors of an organization called "California Common Sense." (Don't confuse it with California Common Cause, which put out a statement noting "California Common Cause has no affiliation with California Common Sense."). Sloss' previous experience as a critic of government was with the right-wing college organization, campusreform.org, where he stars in a video denying climate change: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVFg88a4MhA. But there's more to California Common Sense than just Sloss the poser. The group was co-founded by Tea Party and right-wing former Assembly candidate Nathan Mintz, who waged an unsuccessful race against Assemblymember Betsy Butler last year. At the time, California Majority Report named Mintz the "Wackiest GOP Assembly Hopeful" http://www.camajorityreport.com/index.php?aid=4503&func=display&module=articles&ptid=9.
Exhibit A: Mintz links homosexuality to rape and sex with animals. Here's his view, direct from the horse's mouth: "Regarding homosexuality, the laws make more sense when viewed in this context. The surrounding pagan people's oftentimes engaged in barbaric acts of sexuality and brutalityinvolving mutilation, rape orgies, sex with animals, etc. Pretty much any sick thing the human mind could conjure up. Homosexuality was in many ways a stepping stone to thisin the ancient world- anyone who has studied classics will understand that homosexuality activity was widespread (no doubt among the egyptians as well) among most of theMediterranean peoples- suffice it to say, anyone who can look at the Greeks and Romansand view them as entirely civilized should have their head examined." (The Vast Right Wing Jewish Conspiracy [Mintz Personal Blog], 2/25/2005;http://vastworldwidejewishconspiracy.blogspot.com/2005/02/gay-marriage-why-its-bunk-issue.html) Mintz's lunacy extends to female athletes. Check this out: The rugby players had a beirut [sic] tournament downstairs tonight. It was truly a sad display- most of these girls were so ugly that it hurt me to look at them. I see why it's the preferred sport of lesbians. Made me realize how terrible being single can be sometimes. Man, I hope the pickings are better than that in the real world." (Mintz LiveJournal Entry, 2/20/05, http://inertia826.livejournal.com/10597.html) And what's he think of Democrats? "The democratic [sic] party must be purged of its moral relativist elements and returned to the state it was in at the time of the New Deal. It has become beholden to the ideology of tolerance to the point of lunacy; to where they will tolerate the continued calls to violence and Jihad by parties in not just the madrassahs of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, but from the pulpits of mosques in our own country as merely an expressions of cultural values. This is the ideology on which the democratic party rests (Mintz LiveJournal Entry, 10/31/04, http://inertia826.livejournal.com/7855.html) So given this, why would any Democrat stand by the side of this group? It's one thing to criticize the Assembly and the Legislative Records Act. But shacking up with the Tea Party to do it doesn't make much sense to me. Is the Tea Party Fueling the Attacks on the California's Assembly?
Posted by: david_t on August 31, 2011Their chairman of the board, Joe Lonsdale, is no picnic either. He's on the board of the Seasteading Institute, which wants people to live on platforms in the ocean, so they can be beyond the reach of the Constitution. (I am not making that up.) The institute's executive director is Patri Friedman, grandson of Milton, and they are financed by Peter Thiel, the Facebook/PayPal billionaire who has written that freedom and democracy are "no longer compatible," apparently because too dang many people don't vote the way he wants.
Why a Democratic assemblymember would hang out with these guys is beyond me.
