Steve Pougnet also Tapped for DCCC's Red to Blue Program

March 10, 2010 @ 12:15 PM
Sherry Greenberg Steve Pougnet, who is challenging Mary Bono Mack in CA-45 is one of thirteen candidates that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has identified as likely to flip a seat from the red to the blue column.

While the DCCC typically identifies other such candidates, as the cycle progresses, the first named Red to Blue candidates are considered the strongest.  Per Roll Call, quoting the DCCC, the criteria for inclusion in the Red to Blue program is that: "the candidates selected for the program this cycle must surpass “demanding fundraising goals” and demonstrate their political abilities before making the list. But now that these Democrats are in the program, the committee offers them financial, communication, grass-roots and strategic support."

In a cycle where many Democrats are running on the defensive, the DCCC has good reason to put as many Republican seats in the cross hairs as possible -- so that Republicans have to spend money and effort defending seats and cannot simply aim their resources at picking up Democratic seats. Nonetheless, Pouget is a strong candidate and Bono Mack is vulnerable.  Obama carried this district 51.5 - 46.9%.  A wild card factor is that this district has been hit extremely hard by the real estate bust.  Many who lived in the district in 2008 may have been forced to relocate due to foreclosures.

Pouget http://www.electpougnet.com/ is the sitting Mayor of Palm Springs.  He previously served on Palm Springs City Council.  Pouget is also Chairman of the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG), Chairman of the Energy & Water Conservation Subcommittee as well as Vice-Chairman of the CVAG Energy and Environment Committee. He is also Vice Chairman of Sunline Transit Agency, the region’s public transportation management organization. Steve is also a Board Member of the Palm Springs Desert Resort Convention and Visitors Authority and a member of the Riverside County Transportation Commission. Mr. Pougnet also serves on the Riverside County Indian Gaming Local Community Benefit Committee.  Pouget is openly gay.

Bono Mack was first elected to fill the remainder of her late husband Sonny Bono's term.  Bono Mack is currently married to Florida Congressman Connie Mack.
