If GOP Doesn't Want Maldo as LG, Have a Primary

February 08, 2010 @ 5:35 PM
Steven Maviglio Republican Assemblymember/U.S. Senate candidate Chuck DeVore today became the first Assembly GOP member to say he'll vote against State Sen. Abel Maldonado as LG. No surprise: if the Flash Report says jump, DeVore says how high.

What I don't get is that if the ultra right-wing Republicans want to be done with Maldo, they should let him get the LG job. And then, promptly, dump him in the June primary.

That would, of course, have him out of their hair once and for all. He'd be gone from the Senate and his statewide fortunes would be finished once and for all.

Of course, Sen. Jeff Denham would have been the strongest rival for Maldo. But he foolishly took the bait to get out of the race and run for Congress, where he now is an underdog to capture that seat. Maldo's current rival has no cash and no name ID.

So what isn't the right-wing fielding a candidate? Beats me. Maldo would be toast against just about any true-red conservative in a primary. Just ask Tony Strickland.

What I do know is that some on the right simply don't want Maldo to get the job because they see it as a "promotion." Even the job has no clout whatsoever, they do not believe Maldo should be elevated because of his votes on taxes and the state budget.

But they should put their money where their mouth is. Put up (a candidate) or shut up.
