Assembly Democrats: GOP Budget Hurts Schools, Most Vulnerable Californians

September 03, 2008 @ 3:09 PM

California Assembly Speaker Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) held a news conference today to discuss the Republican legislator’s budget plan. Speaker Bass made it clear the GOP plan, which they presented two months after the new fiscal year began, falls far short of the needs of California. The Speaker pointed out the GOP budget includes $5.5 billion dollars in cuts to education and $1.5 billion to safety net programs for the state’s most vulnerable people, as well as two billion dollars in borrowing, while still leaving the state with deficits for years to come.

The Assembly Budget Committee is holding a hearing on the Republican budget plan this afternoon to give Republican lawmakers an opportunity to explain their budget proposal.
