Today's Fresh MeatIf you're looking for more evidence of John McCain being out of step with California, look no further than his own supporter, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who told Meet the Press this morning he opposes the proposed gay marriage ban, while McCain recently voiced his support for it. This also comes on the heels of a high profile disagreement between the two over offshore oil drilling.Schwarzenegger also told Tom Brokow this morning that he is disappointed by the gridlock in Washington and wants to see the parties work together, the Associated Press reports, advice they could probably use in Sacramento as well. In case you missed, we're back to the 1-10 series for ballot measures, as Secretary of State Debra Bowen recently assigned number to the propositions, Capitol Alert reports. Some highlights: Proposition 1 on high speed rail funding, Proposition 2 on the treatment of farm animals, Proposition 4 on parental consent for abortion (the third attempt), Proposition 8 banning gay marriage and Proposition 11 on redistricting. The hold-up over this year's budget matters to the millions of Californians who rely on the government for assistance with health care, as delayed checks and volatile expectations are driving some providers to withhold service, the Sacramento Bee reports. Let's hope our "no tax pledge" friends keep this in mind. Health care services are not the only bills the state won't be paying; the Bee reports that among the other government programs that won't get a check include community colleges, local government and special education. A combination of compassion and un-paralleled patience paralyzed Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums from dealing effectively with a city administrator who inappropriately used her police powers to help a nephew, Matier and Ross report. On a separate note, they also note that Kamala Harris is considering a run for Attorney General in 2010, but her opposition to the death penalty may not play well statewide. Back to McCain: even GOP strategist are openly questioning his unorthodox decision to keep talking about "radical Islamic extremists" and foreign policy at a time when most Americans are concerned more about gas prices and the economy, the Los Angeles Times reports. The LA Times also reports that Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been touting Texas Congressman Chet Edwards are a potential VP, or at the least, someone who should play a larger role in Democratic leadership. Edwards is an extraordinarily gifted politician and talented public servant, as he represents a district that voted 70% for Bush and even includes the president's Crawford ranch.
