Democrats Gear Up to Thwart GOP Electoral College Initiative

August 16, 2007 @ 7:58 AM

That didn't take long.

California's top Democratic leaders, labor, and fundraisers today will announce the formation of a committee to defeat an initiative being proposed by Republicans that would would rig the state's electoral college votes for the GOP. See previous post.

Californians for Fair Election Reform will be leading the charge against the initiative. U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, Senate President pro Tem Don Perata, LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, SF Mayor Gavin Newsom, and Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums will lead the political charge. On the fundraising end, the committee has tapped the deep pockets of Democratic contributors Steve Bing and Tom Steyer.

"This Republican initiative is the wrong reform at the wrong time in the wrong place," said Sens. Boxer and Feinstein. "If we want to change the way we elect the president, we should go to a direct national popular vote -- where it would be guaranteed that the presidential candidate who receives the most votes in all 50 states will win the presidency. This power grab, orchestrated by the Republicans, is another cynical move to keep the Presidency in Republican control."
