Republican Dirty Tricks Come to Brown-Doolittle race

November 03, 2006 @ 5:25 PM

Republicans have begun their classic voter suppression tactics in Congressional races across the country, including California’s CD 4. This cycle’s version of the Republican dirty tricks campaign comes in the form of misleading robo calls appearing to come from the Brown campaign. Voters are deluged with 10-12 calls a day and at night. They mention Charlie Brown’s name numerous times throughout the beginning of the call so that voters are led to believe that the call is from the Brown campaign. Because the calls are coming repeatedly throughout the day and night, voters are hanging up before hearing the disclaimer at the end that says the call is paid for by the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The calls started last week and have spread to Congressional races in Florida, Washington, and Pennsylvania, perhaps more. There are reports that in some districts the calls give a call-back number that goes to the Democratic candidate’s campaign office. The Democratic campaigns are getting inundated with calls from angry voters who wrongly think that the calls are coming from the Dem candidate.

The calls are so widespread in CD 4 that the Brown campaign cannot contact enough voters to correct the record. The mainstream press has yet to pick up on the story in the Brown district, so voters are not hearing from a neutral source that the calls are from the GOP not the Brown campaign.

Press Release from FL-13

Posted by: Michael on November 03, 2006

To our supporters in the 13th District:

Voters all across the 13th District have reported receiving nasty and misleading automated phone calls, sometimes as many as 10 a night.

These calls are not coming from Christine Jennings!

Many of these "robo-calls" impersonate Christine's voice and create the impression that she is the person speaking. The calls are so long (they sometimes last several minutes) that few people listen to them all the way to the end, where they would hear that the calls are paid for by Vern Buchanan for Congress or the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC).

The purpose of these calls is to anger voters and suppress voter turn-out. And if we don't respond with a fury, it's going to work. The voters of Florida's 13th District are outraged. The Bradenton Herald published an article about the calls, which you can read by clicking here.

Vern Buchanan and the NRCC are so desperate that this despicable campaign tactic is all they have left. We absolutely must fight back and we can't do it without your help.

This is what we need you to do:

1. If you receive any of these robo-calls, please do your best to record them and notify us immediately. Call Kathy Vermazen or email her at Kathy@christinejenningsforcongress.com. Note the time of the call(s), caller ID, message, and disclaimer identifying who paid for the call. By collecting and logging this information, we can put an end to this despicable tactic.

Republican Dirty Tricks Come to Brown-Doolittle race

Posted by: Trent on November 03, 2006

The Poizner campaign is doing the same thing to Democratic HH's in both Los Angeles and San Diego. The "mainstream press" refuses to acknowledge this behavior. Voters beware, the worst is yet to come.
