California Watch: Donations Show Senator Dutton, Assemblymember Logue Pimping for Oil Companies, Polluters
California Watch, a project of the Center for Investigative Reporting, reported today that two Texas oil companies, Valero and Tesoro, have spent more than $160,000 trying to influence California lawmakers this year with campaign contributions. The full article can be found here: http://californiawatch.org/watchblog/texas-oil-refiners-deep-heart-california-politics. The figures include significant contributions to Assemblymember Dan Logue (R-Linda), sponsor of anti-clean air legislation, and Senate Republican Leader Bob Dutton. Oil and gas industries are the major bankrollers of their campaigns, along with cement companies and other major polluters. Also contributing bucks is the California Manufacturers and Technology Association, the main funders of the fraudulent "AB 32 Implementation Group" (whose goal it is to suspend it). Connect the dots: Logue files a bill on their behalf to repeal AB 32. And Dutton delivers a daily message on their behalf bashing AB 32. Note that these contributions from Valero and Tesaro are in addition to the $1.6 million they are reportedly contributing to an effort to kill AB 32, the state's clean energy law. The following is a statement from f Californians for Clean Energy & Jobs, a coalition of business, health, and environmental groups fighting Valero's initiative: "It's a brash move for two giant Texas oil companies to try to contribute heavily to California politicians and then buy their way onto the ballot. But we believe Californians will see this deceptive initiative for what it is: two of the state's largest polluters trying to kill California's clean energy economy and skirt our state's clean air laws." Correlation doesn't equal causation
Posted by: David on March 08, 2010And conspiracy theories aside, the reason a growing number of Californians oppose the global warming tax is simply this: We don't want to pay more money for gasoline, groceries and just about everything else we buy. We pay enough taxes already, thank you!
