It's On: Kamala Harris Camp Hits Back at Kelly as "Eminently Unqualified"

March 01, 2010 @ 5:50 PM

Earlier today we posted a story about charges made by Chris Kelly in the AG race (see below). Late this afternoon, the Kamala Harris campaign fought back, blasting Kelly as "eminently unqualified" and saying he got his statistics all wrong.

Here's the text of the memo from the Harris campaign manager Brian Brokaw:

Question: What happens when a Facebook “chief privacy officer” turned self-funded candidate for Attorney General, who admits his only courtroom experience consists of “clerking for a federal judge in San Diego” during his “first year out of law school,” launches an attack?

Answer: he gets it all wrong.

Apparently Mr. Kelly, with his one-year of clerking in federal court, doesn’t know how to access the latest crime statistics.

What Kelly would have seen, had the guy who wants to oversee the Department of Justice, known to look at the DOJ’s most recent numbers through June 2009, is that:

•         Homicides in San Francisco decreased by 51.9 percent through June 2009, far exceeding the statewide decrease of 18.2 percent during the same period;
•         Robbery in San Francisco decreased by 16.3 percent, again exceeding the statewide decrease of 8.5 percent;
•         Total violent crime decreased 13.1 percent, exceeding the statewide drop of 6.2 percent;
•         Property crime in San Francisco decreased by 5.5 percent;
•         Larceny and theft decreased by 9.8 percent;
•         Arson decreased by 19.8 percent.

Instead of spending $2 million and counting of his own Facebook fortune running for a job for which he’s eminently unqualified, perhaps he should go back and clerk another year – and actually learn a little something about fighting crime."

Ouch.
