Senator Steinberg's Message to Progressives: Failure to Pass Will Be "Economic Catastrophe"

No one takes a back seat to State Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg nor Assembly Speaker Karen Bass when it comes to being progressive. That's why it's frustrating to see some self-described progressives who have no realistic alternative to the initiatives on the ballot criticizing our two Democratic leaders who are championing the May 19th initiatives.

In an interview with the Sacramento News & Review this week, State Sen. Darrell Steinberg makes the case for Props 1A-F. It's an amazing read.

In it, Steinberg says:

  • On progressive opponents: "We have a responsibility to balance the budget. our failure to do that would result in economic catastrophe for the very people who we as progressive Democrats are responsible for standing up for."
  • On Phil Angelides: "He's wrong because the logic that 'if we let these go down then we will show the people that the system needs to be fix, in our way,' that doesn't compute to me.
  • On what happens after May 19th. "It is going to be much more difficult to go about reforming the system if we are endless mired in crisis. It's not just the reality."

I'm glad that Sen. Steinberg says that reasonable people can disagree about the propositions, and that he is absolutely committed to repealing the 2/3 rules, because it's critical for all of us to work together to make that happen. It's the only way forward for California now.

The PPIC poll makes clear that the propositions are failing for a variety of reasons, but it's not because of any across-the-board anti-tax sentiment: voters prefer higher taxes to lower services, by 48% to 43%, even in the middle of possibly the toughest economic situation since the Depression.
