Villaraigosa Pulls Out of Democratic Convention

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will not be attending the California Democratic Party's convention in Sacramento this weekend, the California Majority Report has learned.

The official reason is that the Mayor is tied up with city budget issues. But insiders say Villaraigosa feared that he couldn't compete in the convention buzz with the other major candidates gunning for gubernatorial prize. For example, San Francisco Mayor Newsom has been organizing for the convention for months and has several events planned, including a blockbuster block party on Saturday night.

Villaraigosa also may be fearing a cold shoulder from organized labor at the convention. The Mayor's budget proposals have put him at odds with some unions and progressives, which dominate the delegation population.

Will this no-show hurt Villaraigosa if he ultimately decides to run? It sure won't help. First impressions are important in politics. And as Woody Allen says, 80 percent of success is showing up.
