BREAKING: Prop 8 Campaign Launches Last-Minute Robocalls Featuring Misleading Audio of Senator Obama

November 03, 2008 @ 6:46 PM

The Proposition 8 campaign's efforts to write discrimination into California's constitution for the first time reached predictable lows today, with robocalls misleading recipients into thinking future President Barack Obama supports Proposition 8. In fact, as readers of CMR know, Obama and future Vice President Joe Biden both oppose Prop 8, on the grounds that it's wrong to write discrimination into state constitutions.

Precise demographic turnout will determine the outcome of many propositions tomorrow, Prop 8 included. Both campaigns consider African American Democrats a key swing constituency and have targeted them heavily in the past week. Supporters of the ban on same-sex marriage cite historic African American religosity, while opponents of Prop 8 are optimistic that the legacy of the civil rights movement gives black Americans special reluctance to log discrimination into the law. Clearly, Obama holds tremendous sway over these voters, and it's no surprise that both sides would co-opt his name. The key difference, obviously, is the inarguable reality that the No on Prop 8 campaign can actually count Senator Obama among their ranks.
