Speaker Nancy Pelosi Speaks Out Against Prop 8

November 03, 2008 @ 11:47 AM

Last night, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi went on San Francisco's KRON 4 to express her opposition to Proposition 8, the initiative to eliminate marriage rights for committed gay and lesbian couples.

"I wanted to add my voice to Senator Feinstein, Senator Boxer, President Clinton, 300 pediatricians, scores of California constitutional and family law scholars, and business leaders in opposition to Proposition 8," she said. "This is a mean-spirited proposition that is discriminatory and unfair. You always go in the direction of more freedom, not less."

That last line is worthy of repitition: "You always go in the direction of more freedom, not less."

Prop 8 would do the opposite, putting us in the direction of less freedom, not more. It could revoke the marriages of an estimated 16,000 same-sex couples who have already gotten married, couples who just want to live in a state that doesn't treat them as second-class citizens. And it would prevent access to that institution for untold thousands more. We are better than to allow discrimination to be written in our constitution. The No on Prop 8 campaign is taking walk-in volunteers from now until polls close tomorrow. Stop on by.
