Garry South, BSG, to Join Newsom for Governor Campaign

August 19, 2008 @ 12:19 PM

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom made a few big hires today. Garry South, a longtime California strategist who worked on the Gray Davis and Steve Westly for Governor campaigns, was snagged as a "senior advisor" to the Newsom exploratory campaign. They also picked up BSG, which is led by Joel Benenson, chief pollster for Senator Obama, and Peter Brodnitz, who was named the the "Pollster of the Year" by the American Association of Political Consultants in 2006.

By picking up South, a CMR contributor who has also worked on campaigns for Al Gore and Joe Lieberman and who was once named "Campaign Manager of the Year" by the AAPC, the Newsom campaign is sure to rile the feathers of some on the progressive left. But South is widely known in media and Democratic circles, and he certainly brings some heft to the campaign.

"This is just the beginning of our efforts to recruit the best policy, research and political minds in America," Newsom campaign manager Eric Jaye said.
