Today's Fresh Meat

July 25, 2008 @ 9:40 AM

State Controller John Chiang (who remains 'John who?' to much of the public) deserves kudos for standing up to Governor Schwarzenegger and promising to pay state workers in full, rather than drag them into the budget fight as Arnold would do. But the Sacramento Bee reports that maybe these headlines are what the Governor wants.

Left-wing Supervisor Aaron Peskin eeked out a win as chair of San Francisco's powerful central committee over the more moderate Scott Wiener, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Peskin seems like a decent guy, but he has made a name for himself opposing Mayor Gavin Newsom and may fuel rather than heal divisions in the Democratic Party.

Usually spending tens of thousands of dollars, taking the UC Regents to Court and eventually gaining concessions would be enough to move on, but Berkeley activists still taunted the City Council for "caving" on Tuesday when members refused to appeal a ruling overturning the stay on UC Berkeley's proposed athletic center, the Chronicle reports.

Proponents of Proposition 8, the mean-spirited attempt to amend our state constitution to ban gay marriage, are falsely claiming that failure to pass the measure would mean kindergarteners would be taught that gay marriage is equivalent to traditional marriage, according to the Chronicle. We only hope these lies will catch up with them.

Getting a same-sex marriage may be tough, but according to this Los Angeles Times story, getting a divorce is even tougher, as shown by this Rhode Island couple whose current state does not recognize their marriage, but the the state they married in (Massachusetts) only allows divorce for residents.

Senator Boxer, chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee, has released documents showing strong language from the EPA endorsing serious action on global warming, the Bee reports, an example of the anti-science bias starting to be unravaled.

Lastly, the California Progress Report has a plug for the Cal in the Capitol programs. Check it out.

That's all for today!
