Gay Marriage Initiative Strategist Says "There Will Be No Gay Bashing" in Campaign

June 24, 2008 @ 8:54 AM
Steven Maviglio It will be a kindler, gentler campaign to ban gay marriage, Frank Schubert, who will manage the effort to approve the initiative, told a meeting of the American Association of Political Consultants in Sacramento on Monday.

Predicting it will rival the presidential race for attention, Schubert said he will run a "positive, uplifting campaign."

"There will not be any gay bashing in our campaign," he said. "If other supporters try it, we will do everything we can to stop it."

Schubert noted that more than 500,000 signatures were gathered by 27,000 volunteers (not paid signature gatherers) and he expects a coalition of 100,000 supporters at the state, regional, and local level to organize to promote it. Although he wouldn't put a dollar figure on the race, he expected significant sums to be spent on both sides, with much of it coming from online sources.

The GOP consultant said about one-third of the electorate is up for grabs on the initiative, and his side will run a focused campaign focusing on messages to reach this group. Although he wouldn't get into specifics, he noted that "every culture in the history of mankind has recognized it (marriage) as between a man and a woman."

Maggie Linden, repsenting the NO side, said her campaign has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support to oppose the initiative. She read the surprise editorial in the Orange County Register opposing the initiative. She too predicted an overwhelming number of volunteers and a broad coalition that would oppose it.

Gay Marriage Initiative Strategist Says "There Will Be No Gay Bashing" in Campaign

Posted by: Daniel Roth on June 24, 2008

So an initiative that is nothing more than legalized gay bashing is not going to use any gay bashing...maybe I am just confused, or that is the most assinine comment I have heard (and for someone who works in professional politics, that's saying something.)

OF COURSE THIS INITIATIVE IS GAY BASHING. It comes from a point that gay and lesbian couples are unequal. It will use homophobia to accomplish those gains, and if it passes it will be used to justify homophobic policies throughout the United States.

OC Register shouldn't be a suprise

Posted by: SDPolitico on June 25, 2008

The OC Register is conservative-in the tradional sense of the word...not the neo-con sense of the word. I usually say they are right on about half of the issues-liberal on most social issues and keeping government out of people's personal lives. Seeing their editorial really did not suprise me whatsoever.

"every culture in the history of mankind has recognized it (marriage) as between a man and a woman"

Posted by: Chino Blanco on July 08, 2008

I wonder how many folks (out of that one-third of the electorate that's up for grabs in the Prop 8 battle) are church-goers who'd be familiar enough with their Bibles to question the assertion that "every culture in the history of mankind has recognized it (marriage) as between a man and a woman" ??

What to make of Abraham, Jacob, David, and Solomon? Or does Old Testament culture not count? Or perhaps the Old Testament is not history?
