New Chrisitan Coalition Undermines GOP Right-Wingers on Immigration

May 08, 2007 @ 6:05 PM
Steven Maviglio The rabid anti-immigration politics of the California Republican Party and its allies is about to be undermined by a new coalition of religious groups calling for comprehensive immigration reform. It's yet another headache reminiscent of Prop 187 for Republican Party strategists unsure whether to court the anti-immigrant fervor among its ideological base (a la Tom Tancredo and Assemblymember Chuck DeVore) or turn-off the rapidly rising Latino electorate in the state, many of which sometimes side with the GOP on social issues.

"Christians for Comprehensive Immigration Reform" represents a coalition of Christian organizations, churches, and leaders from across the theological and political spectrum united in support of comprehensive immigration reform. In addition to heavy-hitter national churches, Included are dozens of Golden State groups including: Red de Pastores of theSouthern California "La Red" Network of Pastors and Latino Leaders; Walter Contreras, Director of Church Planting, Covenant Church; Pepe Caballero, Director of Programs, Radio Zion;Dr. David P. Espinoza, Senior Pastor, La Trinidad Church and Vice-Chairman, National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference; Jaime Lázaro, Director & Editor, El Inter Newspaper; Dr. Juan Martínez, Hispanic Director, Fuller Theological Seminary; René Molina, Senior Pastor of Restoration Churches; Ricardo Moreno, National Organizer for Latino Relations, Bread for the World;  Victor Perez, Pastor, Believers in Christ Ministries in Bakersfield; Pastor Carlos Quintero, Vice President, United for Christ; Richard Ramos, Executive Director, Latino Coalition of Faith & Community Initiatives; Rev. Samuel Rodriguez Jr., President, National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference in Sacramento.

"Despite our differences on other issues, we are working together to see comprehensive immigration reform enacted this year because we share a set of common moral and theological principles that compel us to love and care for the stranger among us," said the group in a statement.
