Democrats Eyeing Houston Assembly Seat
The 15th Assembly District -- which occupies the Delta suburbs and stretches into Alameda and Contra Costa counties -- has been one of the most hotly-contested assembly races in the state. The current occupant is Assemblymember Guy Houston, who has struggled to victories against two solid Democrat candidates, most recently attorney Terry Coleman. Houston is termed out and/or weighing a race for the Congressional seat taken by Democrat Jerry McNerney last Fall.So it's no surprise that Democrats already are eyeing this district as a takeover for the 2008 elections, no matter what Houston (who recently was dissed by the Governor's chief of staff in the Governor's tapes) decides to do. GOP registration has slipped to just a 2.1 percent advantage over Democrats. Meanwhile, the district has been trending Democratic in state races, and McNerney's re-election campaign should drive Democrats and Democratic-leaning moderates to the polls in 2008. Today, environmental entrepreneur Fred Klaske filed the paperwork to run for the seat, becoming the first to throw his hat into the ring. He's hired Jim Ross, a political consultant who helped run Mayor Newsom's campaign in 2003 as well as "Care Not Cash" Prop N in San Francisco. In the last cycle, the SF-based Ross was up in Oregon, working on Governor Tom Kulongowki's race. Here's an excerpt from Klaske's release: "I am going to work tirelessly to represent the residents of the 15th Assembly District and California as we take on the very serious problems that face our state." He went on to say; "My campaign will focus on the issues that directly affect each of us, I believe that we must focus on finding solutions to our most difficult problems, not on making excuses." Do you think McNerney's re-election will drive Democrats to the polls more than defeating Pombo did? Somehow I doubt it, and in the face of the anti-Pombo push Houston actually increased his margin of victory in 2006 over 2004. If term limits are extended, Houston cruises to victory in 2008. If not, I don't have this handy but, excluding Pombo, what's the last time a Democratic candidate won in a California legislative district where Republicans outnumber Democrats? Ratings |
