CDP Field Operation Defeats $20 Million GOP ElephantThe election results in California demonstrate that despite a strong gubernatorial candidate, the California Republican Party could not push its down-ticket candidates to victory against a strong California Democratic Party field program, which consisted of enthusiastic activists stationed at 51 Democratic Party and Club offices. The Republican Party heavily hyped its field program going into the election, noting that it had invested $20 million to build the most formidable field program ever seen in California. Many reporters and media bought into the hype. The results, though, tell a different story. Across California, volunteers contacted 521,622 voters and personally visited 424,354 homes to seek their support of the Democratic Ticket. Where the Democratic Party concentrated its field efforts, in Los Angeles, the 47% turnout was a three point increase compared to the 2002 November election. Los Angeles County turnout was higher than in Orange, San Bernardino, and Ventura Counties, and over 10% higher than in Riverside County. These were the same Republican bastions where the state GOP had the bulk of their field program. In Los Angeles County, Garamendi won by over 20% and Chiang and Bowen won by about 25%. We also pumped up the GOTV machine in Alameda and Santa Clara, where we also performed greater than three points in both counties. The bottom line: The California Democratic Party is used to outperforming the Republican Party in the field, and this year was no exception. The California Democratic Party partnered with local county committees around the state to reach millions of voters through phone calls, emails, text messages, door to door canvassing, GOTV Rallies, and party materials printed in multiple languages. In addition, over half of our field staff communicated in more than one language. With the defeat of Proposition 85, California voters again said No to weakening reproductive freedoms for women, and they again rejected the unpopular conservative approach to government offered by Republican down-ticket candidates. If I were a member of the Republican party or a donor, I would demand a refund. Sam Rodriguez is the Political Director for the California Democratic Party. Speaking and printing material in the many different languages that are spoken in CA are probably the Dem's key advantages, and something the GOP must learn to do for purposes of survival. ... that's just for starters. CDP Field Operation Defeats $20 Million GOP Elephant
Posted by: billorton on November 15, 2006I've looked closely at one of the Assembly district databases for the GOP's "voter vault" system. The ability to tag someone by special interest and to designate someone on the database as a precinct captain is powerful only when the motivation pushes them into the field to do the hard work. I saw those names and know from the client who works those volunteers -- they weren't lifting a finger... the power was a figment.
